IVF risks and what safe treatment involves

Explaining IVF risks is not about creating fear; it is a foundation of informed consent. Most people complete treatment without a serious complication, but hormone medicines, egg collection and pregnancy itself carry potential risks. An individual level of risk depends on ovarian response, age, medical history and the protocol used.

Safe IVF means more than responding to a complication. Appropriate assessment, individual medicine doses, timely monitoring, single embryo transfer and a clear urgent-contact plan help prevent harm. Before starting, every patient should know which symptoms are expected and which require immediate clinical advice.

Medicines and ovarian hyperstimulation

Injection-site discomfort, bloating, headache, mood changes and mild abdominal symptoms can occur. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is less common but important. With OHSS, ovaries enlarge and fluid can shift into the body. Rapid weight gain, increasing abdominal swelling, vomiting, reduced urine or breathlessness require urgent assessment.

Risk is estimated before and during stimulation. Adjusting the dose, using a different final trigger, freezing all embryos and selected preventive medicines may be considered. The highest possible egg number is not automatically the safest or most effective goal.

  • Never change a medicine dose without instruction
  • Track symptoms or weight if your clinic asks you to
  • Report breathlessness or worsening pain immediately

Egg collection and embryo transfer

Egg collection is a short invasive procedure under sedation. Mild pain and light bleeding are common. Infection, significant bleeding, injury to nearby organs and anaesthetic complications are uncommon but should be covered during consent. Plan for an escort and recovery at home after the procedure.

Embryo transfer is simpler, but multiple pregnancy remains one of the most preventable risks of fertility treatment. Twins and higher-order pregnancies raise premature birth, hypertension and other complications for parent and babies. Elective single embryo transfer is a central safety strategy for suitable patients.

  • Follow fasting and medication instructions before collection
  • Confirm transport home after sedation
  • Discuss the number of embryos separately before transfer

Pregnancy and emotional safety

IVF does not eliminate ectopic pregnancy, so blood tests and ultrasound must follow a positive result on schedule. Miscarriage risk is influenced mainly by age and embryo factors. Most children born after IVF are healthy, while individual pregnancy risks should still be reviewed with the obstetric team.

Waiting, uncertainty and an unsuccessful cycle can carry a significant psychological burden. Support should be available before a crisis develops. Practical planning for work, medicine responsibilities and communication within a relationship can also improve emotional safety throughout treatment.

  • Know the after-hours or emergency contact route
  • Obtain an early monitoring date after a positive test
  • Ask about counselling or psychological support before starting

Frequently asked questions

Do IVF medicines cause cancer?

Current evidence does not clearly show that short-term IVF treatment increases overall cancer risk, but personal and family history should be reviewed. Long-term outcomes continue to be monitored.

When can OHSS begin?

Symptoms can develop around egg collection and in the following days, and may last longer if pregnancy occurs. Follow the clinic’s symptom checklist and contact plan.

When discussing a protocol at Övlad Payı, ask for written information about your personal IVF risks, prevention measures and urgent-contact plan. Safety questions deserve clear answers at every stage of treatment.
