Questions to ask before IVF: a consultation checklist

Preparing questions to ask before IVF does not turn a consultation into an examination. It helps make a complex decision understandable. New terminology, emotion and a large amount of information can make important details easy to forget. Write a list in advance, record answers and, if helpful, attend with someone you trust.

A good clinic welcomes questions and does not require an immediate decision. Sometimes the honest answer is that something is uncertain, but the reason and the plan for managing uncertainty should be explained. The topics below help assess a clinic through transparency, safety and relevance to you rather than a headline marketing figure.

Diagnosis, alternatives and personal probability

Start by asking what the diagnosis is, which findings support it and whether another investigation would change the plan. Why is IVF recommended now? Are waiting, treatment directed at a cause or IUI reasonable alternatives? Time, demands and live-birth opportunity should be compared using the same clear terms.

Any success figure should relate to your age, egg source, sperm factors, diagnosis and treatment history. Clarify whether it describes a test, pregnancy or live birth, and whether it is per cycle started or transfer. Ask separately about cumulative live birth including all frozen transfers after one egg collection.

  • What is our diagnosis and how certain is it?
  • What are the alternatives to IVF and what would waiting change?
  • What are my per-cycle and cumulative live-birth estimates?

Protocol, laboratory and safety

Find out why the medicine protocol was chosen, how many monitoring visits are likely and which findings would change a dose. Your OHSS risk, prevention steps and criteria for stopping a cycle for safety should be explained. Request written instructions for egg collection, sedation and urgent contact outside normal hours.

Ask who is responsible for the laboratory, how identification is safeguarded, how the fertilisation method is chosen and when embryo updates are provided. Policy on single embryo transfer, freezing, storage duration, future use, donation and disposal should be clear before consent.

  • How will my OHSS and procedure risks be reduced?
  • What is the specific indication for ICSI or every add-on?
  • How are embryo number, freezing and future decisions managed?

Cost, logistics and emotional support

A written estimate should separate consultations, tests, medicines, monitoring, collection, anaesthesia, laboratory work, transfer, freezing and storage. Ask which services repeat if there is no result and the conditions of any refund policy. Understand what a package does not include as clearly as what it includes.

Appointment timing, days away from work, medicine delivery and response times affect daily life. Ask about counselling, language support, confidentiality and the complaints process. Confirm who receives questions after you return home and how quickly the team normally responds.

  • A complete written estimate and likely extra charges
  • Appointments, response times and urgent-contact arrangements
  • Counselling, confidentiality and access to a second opinion

Frequently asked questions

What if I forget questions during the consultation?

Keep the checklist on your phone, take notes with permission and ask how to obtain written answers afterwards. You should not be required to sign consent immediately.

Does seeking a second opinion show distrust?

No. IVF is a major medical, emotional and financial decision. A second opinion can clarify alternatives and uncertainty, and a professional clinic should respect that choice.

Bring this checklist to an Övlad Payı consultation, remove points that do not apply and add your own. The purpose of the discussion should be to clarify the plan, risks, probability and full cost—not to rush your decision.
