Suitability is determined after a clinical consultation and individual assessment.

Why consider fertility preservation?

Fertility preservation aims to retain options for having a child in the future. It may be discussed before treatment that could harm fertility or when planning to delay parenthood. Freezing does not guarantee a future pregnancy: it offers an additional possibility.

Who should seek early advice?

A timely discussion is particularly important before chemotherapy, certain radiotherapy treatments or surgery that could affect reproductive organs. Do not delay treatment of the underlying illness yourself. Oncology and fertility specialists should coordinate the safe timing and suitable options.

Age-related changes, certain conditions and family plans may also prompt an early consultation. Confirm which methods are available at the clinic and appropriate for you rather than assuming every option can be provided.

The main options

  • Egg freezing. Following stimulation and collection, suitable mature eggs are stored without being fertilised. Future use still involves fertilisation and embryo development.
  • Embryo freezing. Eggs are fertilised with sperm first, and suitable embryos are stored. The sperm source, consent and future use decisions need discussion beforehand.
  • Sperm freezing. A sample is assessed and stored for future treatment. If providing a sample is difficult or sperm numbers are low, other collection approaches may need consideration.

Preparation and practical steps

Assessment considers your medical history, available time, necessary screening and future plans. Egg preservation may involve stimulation, monitoring and collection; sperm collection has different instructions. Results may lead to discussion of one or more treatment rounds, but a fixed number cannot responsibly be promised in advance.

Read the consent documents. Understand what is stored, who can make decisions about its use, how to update your contact information and the choices concerning material you do not use.

Realistic expectations and risks

Age when eggs are frozen and the number of mature eggs stored influence future prospects. Not every egg or embryo continues developing after warming; fertilisation, transfer and live birth are separate milestones. Freezing also does not remove the health risks of pregnancy at an older age.

When stimulation and egg collection are involved, IVF risks such as OHSS, bleeding and infection remain relevant. Discuss personal risks, alternatives and expected benefit with your clinician. Knowing when the chance is very low is an important part of an informed decision.

What should I ask about storage and costs?

Ask separately about collection, laboratory work, initial freezing, annual storage and future use. Confirm storage periods, consent renewal and transfer arrangements with the clinic. Legal limits and funding rules described by overseas sources do not automatically apply in Azerbaijan.

What happens when I want to use the material?

Your health is reassessed and an individual plan is made. Using eggs or embryos may involve IVF or embryo transfer. Having stored material does not, by itself, establish that treatment is medically suitable at that time.
